Psalms, hymns and spiritual songs – Do you have a favorite?

Opened Hymnal with traditional songs

Ephesians 5:19 says “Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord”.

There are so many wonderful songs of praise and worship. There is nothing like Christians gathering together and uniting their voices in song. At Beltway singing is an important of our worship service and when we assemble for Bible Study. We also sing when we visit the sick or feed the homeless. We simply join in and sing in 4 part harmony. There are no musical instruments – just Christians singing and giving praise. It sounds good and those songs stay in your head all week. We have a song leader who select the songs and we sing a variety.

Now everybody has their own favorite song – that song that we sing to ourselves or teach our children. Songs that have been comforting us for years. Songs have special meanings to us and carry us through good times and bad. It is hard to narrow it down to just a few and say this one is one’s favorite. Personally, I like every song Sylvia Rose has written and of course a lot of the old traditional ones like “Jesus Keep me near the Cross”. I can still hear my late grandmother humming it as she worked around the house.

Perhaps my favorite though is “We Saw thee not”. It was written by Anne Richter many many years ago. Our church hasn’t sung it in years but I can still sing it in my head. Some of the words are:

We saw Thee not when Thou didst come
To this poor world of sin and death;
Nor yet beheld Thy cottage home,
In that despisèd Nazareth.
But we believe Thy footsteps trod
Its streets and plains, Thou Son of God.
But we believe Thy footsteps trod
Its streets and plains, Thou Son of God.

We did not see Thee lifted high,
Amid that wild and savage crew;
Nor heard Thy meek, imploring cry,
“Forgive, they know not what they do!”
Yet we believe the deed was done,
That shook the earth and veiled the sun.
But we believe the deed was done,
Which shook the earth and veiled the sun.

I like it because of the words and I think it should be the Christian’s anthem. I love the idea that we didn’t see but we believe. I also like “An empty Mansion” and “They tell me of a Home”.

Again, everyone has their own favorites. What is your favorite and why has it come to mean so much to you? Also how important are the words to you when you sing or is it the melody that is important to you? If you have a link of it being sung, please share it.
