Daily Bread #8
“Since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, arm ye yourselves also with the same way of thinking…”
In my article yesterday, I wrote about the spiritual warfare that is being waged against us at the deepest level of our existence, the soul. Earlier in Peter’s letter, chapter 2:11, The Holy Spirit through the mind of Peter, tells us that of a truth there is a war that is being made against the soul. “Beloved, I beseech you as sojourners and pilgrims, to abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul .” Christians therefore are encouraged to equip themselves with the mind of Christ. How does a Christian arm himself with the mind of Christ, and what is the mindset of Christ?
A Christian can arm his mind by allowing his mind to be saturated with the will of God. Jesus would often remind His listening audience that the goal of His life was to fulfill His Father’s will. Reading scriptures is a wonderful habit. But reading alone is not enough. One must think deeply, and meditate quietly on what God is telling him to do. Then that person must put into action the will of God for his life. James tells to be doers of the word and not hearers only (James 1:22). But what is the will of God for us? The will of God for us is multifaceted. Let us focus on one aspect of God’s will for us. “For this is God’s will: that you become holy, that you keep away from sexual immorality.” It is God’s desire to see His children living holy or sanctified lives before Him.
The mindset that we must equip ourselves with is that of Christ (1Pet. 4:1; Phil. 2:5; 1Cor. 2:16). What do the New Testament writers mean by this? At the deepest level of our existence we should be united with Christ by thinking like Christ. The mind of Christ was a subservient mind; it followed the leading of God’s word. Philippians 2:1-11 has the formula on how to have a daily victory over the devil and his angels. At the end of this victory is a reward from God, our exaltation.
As we prepare to take on the day, let us approach it with the mind of Christ, being mindful that we are in a spiritual warfare. We should also brace ourselves with these thoughts:
- God did not leave us to fight this spiritual battle all by ourselves; help is always available.
- To be united with Christ begins at the deepest level of our existence, think the way He thinks.
- We must be both hearers and doers of God’s word.
- The mind that submits to God will be victorious over the darkness that seeks to enslave it.
- Any person who triumphs over the wicked one, will be exalted by God.
