Daily Bread #9
“Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18 And ado not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, 19 addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart to the Lord” (Eph. 5:15-19 ESV)
“I wish someone had told me” or “I just didn’t know how” is a statement we hear almost every day from people with whom we interact. Whether it is a justified reason for not doing something or a poor excuse for not fulfilling a responsibility, it is a statement that no believer should make concerning how he should live before God.
The passage is a beautiful one in that the apostle Paul gives a series of contrasts beginning in verse 15 before he tells Christians how to be filled with the Spirit. First, the follower of God should not live as an unwise child but a smart son or daughter of God. Why? Because the days are evil. Second, the children of God are not foolish; rather, they do understand their Father’s will. Third, believers should not live as drunkards. That will lead only to unproductive lives. But at the deepest level of their existence, each one must be filled with the Holy Spirit.
In a manner of speaking, a true child of God is one who is intoxicated with God’s Holy Spirit inside of him. But how does a follower of Christ gets himself totally saturated within? Adopt a mindset to sing the Psalms. Determine to let Christian hymns be part of your daily walk. Be steadfast in allowing your minds to be filled with the kind of songs that will always turn your attention and focus on God. Paul calls it spiritual songs.
The Sunday morning worship of songs, prayers and reading of scripture should set in motion what each day that follows the first will be like. God has the answers on how we get better at the deepest level of our existence. The question is, are we prepared to follow God’s lead as He instructs us on how we get there?
- Now you know what God is calling you to do in Ephesians 5:15-19
- Now you know how to be filled at the deepest level of your existence.
- Will you attempt in doing what God says you should do in getting to the next level?
- Whatever you put inside heart is what is going to come out eventually.
